Solitaire, Group, Coven, Tradition?
The
following are definitions that have been written and assembled in the
hopes of helping to provide a better understanding of Groups,
Traditions, Covens, and Solitary life. Often times these terms are
overlapped and used improperly.
-
Solitary Life – Life
as a solitary is just that. You practice your craft by yourself.
You may go to gatherings or have a loose circle of magickal friends,
but you do your work and your honouring of the Goddess on your own.
It is possible to have gone through a Tradition or Coven life and
yet decided on being a Solitaire. Many people think that solitaires
are all self taught. While many of them are there are those that
have been formally trained in a tradition or by a coven and yet
found a life alone with the Goddess only to resonate more for them.
-
Groups – Groups are
a group of people who meet on a semi regular basis for a general
purpose. This could be to have Sabbats, or even moons, and study
groups are another possibility. However, the main difference in a
Group and a Coven is that in a Group there are no oaths or
commitments made to the Group. You are free to come and go as you
wish.
-
Covens – Covens are
usually tight close-knit groups of people. They have come together
and made commitments to each other, taken oaths, and practice
together for a common reason and goal. Covens are in essence
families that have been tied together through karmic connections.
Not all Covens belong to a Tradition. Some are just Covens of like
minded people.
-
Traditions –
Traditions are the most formal. A Tradition is, by definition,
steeped in traditions that will follow all the Covens of that
Tradition. Traditions include those such as Gardnerian,
Alexandrian, Dianic, and Artemisian Faerie Faith, and many others.
